Market rebounds with Travelling Demand
Along the wakening signs of economy, travel business becoming active. Macau International Airport passenger numbers recorded persistent growth. Figures showed increase in both passengers and cargo volume, up 4.8% and 83.7% respectively. While the number of destination passengers recorded to a nearly 20% growth, with the biggest increase in the South East Asian market.
The airport recorded 3,184 aircraft movements representing a drop of 8.7% , with main reason of the usual peak of Chinese New Year in January of last year.
During the Chinese New Year in February, aside from the adding of frequency by airlines, Viva Macau launched its maiden flight from Macau to Hanoi at the Chinese New Year eve, offering three services per week. Besides, the air to sea Express Link Service now added new ferry services from Shenzhen to the temporary ferry pier at Pac On, Taipa. It is anticipated that more passengers would be using the sea service to arrive at Macau International Airport for transit flights, the link had greatly extended the market reach.
From 1st -20th Feb, Macau International Airport recorded 270,471 passengers and 2,169 tons of cargo, up 20% and 21% respectively compared to the same period of last year. Traffic during Chinese New Year recorded an increase with 5.8% in passenger number while a surge of 262% in cargo. The positive growth was resulted from the better view of global trade and economy which greatly accelerate the development of local tourism and logistics business. Plus, coincided with the Valentine’s Day and Chinese New Year fell on the same day, it greatly stimulated traveling demand.
In line with the aviation business recovery, Macau International Airport has continuously developed the mainland and international markets, proactively to explore opportunities with those Indian airlines. The well known low cost carrier, Spicejet has recently visited the airport and would undergo a feasibility study for direct route operation. Figures showed that over 100 thousands Indian nationals arrived Macau last year, a 30% growth over 2008. It is thus considered a very high potential market.
With the persistent positive growth forecasted, a closer cooperation with airlines and the industry would be reinforced to develop the mainland and International markets.
